Floating Pontoon Anchoring Systems

Not all floating pontoons are secured the same way- here’s how to choose the right option.
Options include:
- Screw Anchors – This option is preferred, as they have the greatest holding power and, once installed, remain fixed in position.
- Blocks – An excellent alternative, especially if anchors cannot be installed due to hard rock and reef areas. Blocks weighing 6 to 8 tonnes can be an effective solution.
- Piles – These have their place in very sheltered areas. However, in windy or rough conditions, they can be noisy and cause damage as the pontoon may knock or bash against them. A pile system is also more visible on the waterline and is generally less appealing within the Sounds environment.
- Elasticated Systems – A pontoon anchored with Marine Flex is never passive to the sea, but instead offers firm resistance that substantially reduces wave movements. We are a local New Zealand agent for Marine Flex.
- Chain & Ropes – These can be suspended within the water column to remain off the seabed, reducing the risk of environmental degradation.
The important point is to ensure the floating jetty stays on its own footprint throughout the tidal range. This ensures the linkspan for access remains in the same position. This stability can be achieved using either Marine Flex or suspended chain and rope systems.
